more sketching

Eugh, today we had to do laundry and it was fucking boring but I still tried to do some drawing there (see below) aside from that I did a weird collage thing that looks rough as hell and then coloured in one of my other sketches in photoshop. I wouldn't normally colour in a scanned image without redoing the line art but hey, experimenting is the point eh.

sketchbook pages

These are the first few pages of my a6 sketchbook that I'm using for the drawing approaches unit of my course. These were all drawn on location except the squirrel on the left because they just will not keep still as you can see from my poor attempts to capture them on the lower page. I snagged a photo and sketched it out quickly when I got in from the cold. Some of these pictures were done using blind drawing and then I scribbled some shading on afterwards. as well as watering the ink down in places. I'll probably use my a6 sketchbook for initial sketches and take those images into experiments in a larger sketchbook... maybe?

Oh and here's my final image...

Ok that's unit 1 complete... now it's time for the drawing unit!

Tuesday 8 November 2011

Two more images for the grand finale...

After a little tutorial with Matt, he explained that I shouldn't try to add too much information that already exists in the words I have written to the images that I produce so here are the next two. One more to go!

The Raven's Silhouette #2

I'm not working in order at all here but here's another image for my short story... Hopefully it's pretty obvious what has happened here but if not I can summarise the image. The yellow light on the elderly woman represents his revelation/objective. The shape in the background is his other objective (the front door). The red circles obviously indicate blood and obviously she has an eye missing which just so happens to be in his beak... DO THE MATH(s) ;)

The Raven's Silhouette

Ok so after changing my mind four times on the current project that we've been working I ended up writing a short story about a raven. I should mention at this stage that the project revolved around a word that we were given at random - my word was "Birds". I've been hitting dead end after dead end but after reading Jonathan Livingstone Seagull (at the request of Matt, our head of year for illustration) I decided it was either illustrate that book or write my own short story. Being a total cunt, I decided to write my own story. Anyway, we also had a really good (but perhaps too long for my twisted spine) lecture from the illustrator Matthew Richardson. His collage work really influenced the way that I thought I should illustrate my short story and you can definitely see that I've nabbed his style for the purpose of this project. Here's one of my final images that I completed today, it's written for the scene where the raven fledgling is found by his elderly companion.
I should also point out that I have been without my graphics tablet for a good couple of weeks now and so working in this way is not only convenient but the only way possible!

post card uni mini project

Messing about with drawings and photos taken from our recent trip to Weymouth. Nothing great but it's slightly different to the usual things I come out with.

Sunday 25 September 2011

I miss Gears so much!

I really want to go back to our old flat for a few reasons but one of them tops them all... I WANT TO PLAY GEARS 3 AGAIN! WAAAHHHHH!!!

Saturday 24 September 2011

old man island

Since the flea drawing I fancied doing more photoshop drawing but had noooo idea what to do. I just randomly started placing sketchy blocks everywhere which eventually lead to this old man island thing! How strange!

the current bane of my life

Since me and my girlfriend discovered fleas in our flat in Bournemouth our lives have been pretty grim. We were moved to a temporary flat by the agent until the place is gassed on Monday. Whenever I get an itch I check my body obsessively, whenever I see a small black speck on the carpet or bed quilt I get the hoover out. I love animals and find insects especially fascinating but for these little bastards I am willing to make an exception. I fucking hate them! The best way to deal with this current hellish situation was to draw and make a joke of it and so here is the evidence. The worst part is that they actually look like this (more or less). Happy itching!

sculptris

Matt hooked me up with a download link to a free program called sculptris and it's been fun on a bun :) here's one of my first goes at it.

upper arm anatomical studies

Sometimes you get to that point while drawing where you suddenly realise you don't know enough about what you're drawing to continue... I hit this wall many times and so have taken it upon myself to learn about human anatomy. Today is the arm and this is my first set of drawings. It will be a long process but it will be worth it in the end :)

final sheet for spawn

SPAWN IS COMPLETE... now we need a background

eugh, i will never finish this

so here he is, tweaked a little and almost ready to be submitted. I do feel a little shit at the fact that I won't be using my lovely horsey but it was fun to do and that's what counts RIGHT!?

mask concepts

just a little mess around with different colours over two different mask designs.

failed sketch

this sketch won't be used but had to be uploaded anyway.

just a formality #2

just a formality

I had to resize my images before whacking them on to gameartisans.org so here they are... smaller.

Saturday 13 August 2011

Latest competition WIPs

These are the two latest WIPs of my renaissance spawn character. I've left the cape out for the time being because it is going to take up A LOT space and there's just no need for these early concepts.

Friday 12 August 2011

Alternate Universe Competition

For the alternate universe I tried several ideas. First I was going to do a mutant spiderman, then a mutant batman and THEN a female violator from spawn but FINALLY decided up on a spawn from the renaissance era... watch this space (Matt) ;)

Wednesday 10 August 2011

let the locust handle it idea sketch

Well I was fucking around on photoshop and thought this could make quite a fun drawing... If only it could be real though!

Kayleigh's Threads

My lovely lady Kayleigh was complaining that I draw all the time and she wished that she did more textiles work, so I explained to her that setting up my blog page really motivated me into drawing more. It gave me a reason to produce work because I wanted to fill my page with my drawings. At that point we decided that she should set one up too in the hope that it would motivate her too, so she asked me to do a title for
and so I did. The blog will be up soon :)

Sunday 7 August 2011

news

Incorporating two news stories in to one image... swish!

Friday 5 August 2011

what is it with kids singing over xbox live?!

Clearly I'm a very busy man which is exactly why I had time to go on Xbox live and realise that almost every kid that plays it will sing on open chat non stop for entire match durations. What the hell is that about?!

the bull

This morning I had a go at producing my own cute-style animal using the techniques from yesterdays tutorials and considering this is my first attempt I think it isn't bad at all... I am relatively chuffed.

Thursday 4 August 2011

tutorials

As I stated earlier, I needed to learn a lot of techniques from adobe illustrator again and so I spent an hour or so (maybe more, embarrassingly!) doing a tutorial on gradients and shapes. This horrible looking bunny is the fruit of my labours. More practice wouldn't hurt as you can see, but fuck, it's boring doing tutorials!

The legs were one of the first parts I did on this and it shows because they are the worst part as well!

You may also be able to notice some little errors with the pen tool around the carrot, this is because I was SICK of making shapes and wanted to finish the fucking thing.

robot sketch

Well just as Matt had stated in one of his posts, creating abstract shapes in Alchemy is a lot like looking at clouds. I looked at his abstract symmetrical drawing and instead of seeing a queen with crazy hair and a fancy dress, I saw some sort of mecha. I TRIED to use illustrator to get the symmetry down at first but I really need to re-teach myself a lot of the techniques. Anyway, once I got the basic structure down (top left) I sketched a little bit over it to see where I could go with this design. I want to do more with this but because it's a robot I feel that crisp precise lines are going to be important and illustrator may be the program to help me here... watch this space!

Friday 29 July 2011

colour

Here he is with a little bit of colour on him.

character concept

Matt had been working on the concept of a guitarist who had lost his hand in some sort of drunken brawl. He sent me a picture of his concept and asked me to elaborate on it... Unfortunately, I went totally mental on it and practically changed the whole thing! I will have to talk to him about my ideas surrounding this character, such as the reason he now wears a bandanna on his face all the time and stuff. I had fun doing it though so I hope he isn't too mad that I changed so much :)

Thursday 28 July 2011

the universal language

I couldn't resist messing with the graph paper again and so just for the hell of it I made this little doodle :)
